I'm setting up a website to take monthly subscriptions via credit
cards (around 1000 a month, we hope!, and about £10 each but probably
some in other currencies).

As I already have a business account with Barclays I've applied for a
merchant account with them. However their rates seem a bit high:
3.94% for credit card clearance and if I use the ePDQ service than
another 2% (dropping to 1% if I clear more than 10K/month). Also
because I'm selling a subscription they are going to defer payments to
me for one month.

Barclays + ePDQ: 5.94%

I was just reading the WorldPay website and their charges appear
lower. If I take out their merchant account and their subscription
billing package then it ammounts to the following:

WorldPay: 4.5%

So apart from how long the deferred period would be with Worldpay it
seems to be a more cost effective solution.

Am I missing something basic here? Could anyone give me their
personal perspective on the other UK banks and also on the banks vs
WorldPay?

James

That sounds very steep.
You should be able to get 2.5% easily. Try Lloyds Cardnet and Protx.

We are internet only retailers and can get 1.6% with cardnet, and
started off at 1.9% (Sterling).

If you are going to fork out the set-up fee with a merchant bank, the
least I would expect from them is 2.5%.
When we spoke to Barclays they were awful and wanted to hold our money
for 45 days! No clue.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I agree 100% with that...I use Cardnet and Protx and have found them to be a
very good combination.....

We got a starting rate of 1.6% from them for online retailing....Very nice
indeed....

HSBC are very poor too.....I'd rate Barclays, and HSBC as the two most
clueless merchant providers in the UK.....

Are these prices that were quoted to you by a telephone operator in a call
centre?.....

Arrange for a manager from their merchant department to come out and see
you.....Make sure you have a well presented business plan ready for him and
3 sets of projected figures covering worst, best and average case
scenarios......
Tell him the prices you've been quoted by his colleagues in the call centre,
and tell him that those sort of fee's are unacceptable, and that you've been
quoted figures as low as 1.6% by other banks......If he thinks you're going
to go to another bank after he's taken the trouble to come out and see you,
he'll do everything in his power to keep you as a customer....And remember,
he has the power to change the terms of your merchant account, and that
includes reducing the fee's and reducing the length of time they hold onto
your funds......
I've found you can normally negotiate much better terms when you deal face
to face with the organ grinder, not some monkey on a phone......

Firstly thanks to both of you for the very useful suggestions.

The rate I was quoted was just on the telephone talking to one of
their call centre people. From your advice it sounds like it would be
best to meet with a business manager and haggle.

I've banked with Barclays for years and I've had no particular
problems but I have to agree that the do seem a bit clueless at times.
Certainly if they are this much more expensive I really should vote
with my feet!

In the past I've had business accounts with HSBC who were OK but not
as good as Barclays. I've never tried LlyodsTSB but they get several
good mentioned on various forums. Shame their Cardnet website has
been "in the process of being updated" for the last couple of weeks.

Once again thanks
