I am on an intranet and running XP pro. I decided I
wanted to host a small website for my team to share info,
view docs, etc., so I set up IIS 5.1. So far so good.
I would like to include a discussion board and it looks
like I need the office server extensions (which include
the frontpage server extensions) - got 'em. Will I need
anything else to do this? This is way outside my job
description, so I don't want to kill myself trying to
figure this out if I don't have all the right components.
By the way, I don't know if it matters, but I am building
these web pages in Excel. I would appreciate any advice
pointing me in the right direction. Thanks-Todd >> Stay informed about: Creating discussions board |

How big is your team? Windows XP Pro only support 10
connection, and they can easily be used up by 3 or 4
people. You may want to look at Windows 2003 Server and
Windows Team Services.
I never knew you could build web pages in Excel. I would
try FrontPage...

Office server extensions to run a discussion board? Who told you that?
There are alot of free discussions board using ASP, PHP, ASP.NET, and there
is no need to install Office Server Extensions (not even sure i know what
that is).
If you have something special in mind, i think that you need to tell us what
that is!
What webpages do you build using Excel? I have never seen someone using
Excel to build webpages. I've seen people using Word, which really sucks to
be a HTML Editor...but Excel?!
And you are aware of the limitations running a webserver on a client machine
such as Windows XP? You are limited to 10 concurrent connections (about 5
users).

I'm just trying to figure this out on the fly...so any
errors are my own.
I'm aware of the XP limitation. The teams will run 5-10
people, but I would expect the usage to be fairly
light...just a place to check in and get the latest
occasionally.
I am only talking about the "Discussions" feature built
into office that can be referenced to a document, not a
stand alone message/newsgroup type board. My
understanding is that the extensions are needed to make
that feature (along with subscriptions) available. That
would allow interaction using the Discussions toolbar in
Internet Explorer. My problem right now is that I don't
know how to configure it to work and I'm having trouble
finding documentation.
I built the pages in Excel and used the "save as web page"
option on the File menu...worked fine. I don't have a
license for FrontPage at this time. -Todd

Ahh...now i understand!
No, Office Server Extension should be enough.
I think that a good start for reading about this is here:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/office/2000/all/reskit/en-us/75ct_1.mspx" target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/office/2000/all/reski...n-us/75</a>
And FAQ here:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/office/office2000/tips/osefaq.mspx" target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/office/office2000/tips/osefaq.mspx</a>
Personally, i dont have much experience with this, but maybe someone in the
office newsgroups can help, for example:
microsoft.public.office.misc
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.office.misc&lang=en&cr=US" target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?dg=micros....public</a>

Okay, if you're building web pages in Excel most of the options seem
like they'd be out of your league, but why not run an existing
discussion borad/forum script? Snitz is popular and simple to
configure, though you'll have trouble using Excel.
