Post subject: Can't Create New Web Site
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hello Everyone,

I'm a college IT student in PA and I'm hoping that
someone can help me with a problem I've been having that
the Microsoft site and knowledge base articles can't seem
to explain. I'm running IIS 5.1 and I can't create a
second web site(other than the default one that was
created when IIS was initially installed). When I right
click on the server icon or the Website folder, neither
brings up the action to create a new web site. The
Action menu is also barren of the option to create a new
site.

Is there any possible setting that could be incorrect or
needs to be setup for this option to appear?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Feel free to email
me (whm115@hotmail.com). Thank you!

You are running into one of the limitations of IIS 5.1 on XP Pro. It only
supports one web site and 10 concurrent connections. You will need IIS on a
server version of the OS if you want to have more than one web site.

Hi,

This is by design. On Windows XP (IIS 5.1), you can have only one Web Site.
You need a server edition to be able to create more than one Web Site.

Your version (non-server) only supports 1 root site, but many virtual
directory sites - you could easily have the root site provide a list of
links to virtual directory sites on the same box. It does only support
10 connections.

If you are going to make the SITES available on the public internet, and
you are going to use Windows 2000 server, you will need a CPU license
according to MS licensing agreements.
