Hi,
A customer installed Internet Authentication Service on a w2k server. We
removed it afterwards and reinstalled the IIS as well. Since then when
connecting to the server using http://server it is prompting for username
and password when normally you would get through and see the under
construction page.

Yes it is. This customer installed Internet Authentication Service. We
removed it later but the problem is still there.

This sounds permissions related. Make sure the correct ACLs are on the wwwroot directory. You can also run filemon from www.sysinternals.com to see
what else is failing.
