Post subject: Confused with the use of out-of-process component
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

I am trying to reinstall my Web server with IIS 4 on NT 4 (w/ SP 6a).
However, I am running to situation confused me. According to old MS
papers, there is an AspAllowOutOfProcComponents needed to set up to
"true" for the use of Out-of-Process component. Before it works, I need
to check on the box of the 'Run in separate memory space" in MMC of IIS
4 and then restart the IIS. However, at this new server ( I installed
with FP extension 2k), when I export my data to an excel template at a
specified path and folder, I will get an Excel error '800a03ec', saying
that MS excel cannot access that path - Msworksheet.saveas mypath. If I
unchecked the check box in IIS, then no error occurred. Does it mean
Excel is not out-of-process component or something else I missed? Would
that affect the performance of running out-of-process components?

This question may be better answered in our Office Newsgroup:

319067 HOW TO: Run Applications Not in the Context of the System Account in
IIS
http://kb/article.asp?id=Q319067

(By default, on a computer that is running Windows NT 4.0 Server, or on a
Windows NT 4.0 computer that has Internet Information Server 4.0 installed,
Web sites are set to run <in-process> or under the SYSTEM account. You can
set a Web site or virtual directory and its associated applications to run
in separate memory space and, therefore, run under the IWAM_machine
account.)
