Hi,

I'm putting together a few hints and tips to help people startup an
ecommerce operation.
So far I have these topics:

- Shopping Carts
- Payment Service Providers
- Merchant Accounts
- Customer Support
- Advertising
- Website Hosting
- Suppliers
- Couriers

What others do you think I should add?

Delivery and courier services.....From personal experience I've found that
these can cause a major headache.....It's very important to make sure you
use a service that requires POD signatures....I reccomend CityLink or
NightSpeed for this.....

Perhaps a guide to constructing a good privacy policy and an efefctive set
of terms and conditions......

Point out the importance of helping to fight credit card fraud......A key
element in this is advising traders to only deliver goods to the registered
cardholders address.....

On reflection, I've just noticed that you've already covered the subject of
Couriers, so scrub my first suggestion.....

You may want to touch on stock storage options.....Whether it's better for a
trader to keep a stock of their goods in their own lock-up or warehouse, or
whether it's better for them to operate a syetem of *virtual warehousing*,
whereby their supplier keeps the bulk of the stocks and they keep only 2 or
3 of everything on premises, and as they sell something, they re-order a
replacement in from the supplier......I recommend virtual
warehousing.....From case studies I've read, it was the single biggest
streamlining factor in Amazons operations, and it's worked well for me in
the past.....

Perhaps for those business folks who aren't as IT literate as perhaps they
should be, you could include a database of reputable developers around the
UK who have a proven e-commerce track record.......

The importance of offering alternative payment methods.....Not everyone has
a credit card, debit card, or even a bank account.....Yet there are still
ways that these people can pay......There's no reason why an online trader
can't accept orders by post, with payment by cheque or postal order.......

Give information on alternatives to merchant accounts......

A section on secure hosting and the need to reassure customers that their
shopping experience is a safe one is vital......

Stress the need to give the customers lots and lots of contact
information.....Give them as many ways to get hold of the trader as
possible......

Thanks very much for all your responses. (Especially Sams multiple
posts Smile ) This is really helpful, although its taking me ages typing
all the info in.....

I'm updating as we speak (type).

I'm gearing the site as almost a checklist of things to consider when
starting up, so hopefully it should have helpful points for most
people.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have a few unorthodox but highly effective advertising methods that you
may be interested in mentioning on your lists......Drop me an email to "sam
