Hi All:

I am trying to determine whether to learn the combination of mysql and php
or to learn Cold Fusion (CF) for web database applications. A client if
offering to purchase the CF if that is the direction I want to take. Any
way I turn with this, it's going to be at lease several weeks of learning
time, so which one would be the best to choose? One other factor other than
the CF will be free for me is that I have used Dreamweaver for years and I
know Macromedia is now tied in with CF. So with those factors added in,
which is the best direction? TIA for your opinions!

Definitely PHP and MySQL as it's not only more portable across other sites
and servers, but you're not tied to one vendor. Oh yeah, also a *lot* more
community support for PHP and MySQL than Coldfusion, to boot.

Go with PHP/MySQL combo, more flexible, offered by more sites...in addition
if you know PHP/Mysql combo, by extension, you'll have no problems working
with a PHP/Postgresql combo.

I don't know what you mean by DW tied in with CF. DW helps you with the
tags and syntax for CF, asp, asp.net, php and others.

MySQL is a database so it's not tied to php. CF can equally work fine with
MySQL. You're comparing php with CF as two distinct web development
langauges. PHP has a lot more resources on the web but that doesn't mean CF
is lacking. Check out Macromedia's developer exchange and you're find all
kinds of free tags and components.

For true beginners, I consider CF easier to learn than PHP.
The drawback of Coldfusion is it costs money for the application server.
Like PHP, it works on both Windows and Linux.

An advantage of CF is that you can develop also in Java. Java experience in
your resume gives you a lot more job opportunities than PHP alone. Most
Enterprise application software use Java. PHP is not even an option. Think
of this if you want to open more doors in the future.

Goto to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.dice.com" target="_blank">www.dice.com</a> and get an idea of which language has more job
opportunies. I noticed that ColdFusion has more opportunties than php.

I have found that php/mysql is best considering the amount of support that
is out there

Whatever problem you have in your development, there is usually someone who
has had a similar problem and you can usually find an answer quickly
