Well, due to reasons beyond my control we're moving a site to a new
server, new host, everything. The guys at the new host seem to know
what they're doing, but you never know Wink

Having never switched like this, what would comprise a good checkist
of things to be sure to do (or not do) before doing the final switch
of the domain name? And what dangers lurk in the process?

That article gives incorrect advice/instructions. The following sections
of that article are INCORRECT:

2. Start the Domain Transfer

3. Confirm the Transfer

Contrary to what that article says, you do NOT have to transfer your domain
name registration services to your new host. You only need to update your
dns/nameservers for your domain.

Usually the registrar (company that holds your domain name) gives you a
control panel in which you can manage most aspects of your domain name. You
simply need to log into your domain control panel and update the
dns/nameservers to your new host. You do NOT need to transfer control of
your domain name record to your new host or a new registrar. Also, your
new host cannot instigate a dns/nameserver update for you.

One thing in these apparently apocryphal sections is to notify the
current host of the upcoming change. Is that critical? If that's not
done will it slow the DNS update?

Talking to these guys this morning, they were saying that they could
do that end of it, as I don't know a thing about this. You say they
cannot. Please, more info!

No one can change your domain name's DNS/nameservers, except you. Can you
imagine the chaos that would follow if I could just go ahead and repoint
your domain name to my hosting company without your permission?

Yes, clearly. I appreciate your patience BTW.

So, I would go to the Networks Solutions page, and do what exactly?
(We can take this to email, if you like, if you think it's too
embarassing/annoying/irrelevant for the others.)

Feel free to email me, but I don't mind posting information here either.

If your domain name is actually registered with Network Solutions (remember,
there are many, many other registrars now...not just NetSol), you would go
to : https://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/manage-it/index.jhtml and
log into your domain manager account and update the DNS/nameserver
information to the ones your new host gives you.

1. upload to new server IP address e.g ftp.123.34.345.00
2. test all links/scripts are working via IP address e.g http://123.34.345.00/~username
3. setup new email accounts in your control panel
3. assign new name servers (DNS) with domain registrar only after you are satisfied site
is fully operational
4. allow 24 to 72 hours for DNS to update in the Whois
5. inform old host that you wish to terminate account if on a monthly plan ONLY when DNS
resolves to new host
6. set-up email accounts on local machine after DNS has been updated
