So although this is free, one needs to authorise a $90 credit card
transaction (and get a refund later via PayPal) but what happens at
the start of the second year ?

It is only free for 1 year, as it is a promotional offer. But most likely
there will be other promotional offers to make it free for another year.
Just give you an idea how fast hosting price is falling in the last year:

For the same hosting offer: 1G space, 40G traffic. 1 year price:
Aug 2003: $20 after rebate
Jan 2004: $15 after rebate
Apr 2004: $10 after rebate
Jul 2004: Free after rebate

I don't think it will ever going lower, but you will get added free stuffs
such as free domain registration, added space, added traffic.

This is a better style than "main-in-rebate". It is "email-in-rebate" to
save postage for both sides and for faster communication.

Remember to contact by email, or phone/fax, if you don't get any rebate in
email after 72 hours, as we have seen a lot of lost messages due to strong
