Post subject: Accessing a Site
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

I have been trying to setup a simple Extranet site on my office Win2k Server
w/IIS 5.1. All patches & updates have been installed and I'm running one
default site that contains 2 subwebs. Both subwebs are using unique
permissions. Sharepoint Team Services is installed and being used. One of
the subwebs is for office staff and the other is for board members. I have
no problem using the subwebs at work or from a different location unless I'm
using a machine that isn't running WinXP. When I use a system that has XP
installed I'm simply asked for a username and password and after supplying a
valid Win2k server accounts information I'm allowed to access the site. The
problem is when I use a system with Win 98, I'm asked for User Name,
Password, and Domain. Seems that no matter what information I supply I'm
never allowed access. I have tried changing the check boxes in
Authentication methods from Windows Authentication to Basic Authentication.
That does work and I am asked only for Username and Password on remote 98
systems then allowed access. But then when we're at the physical office we
always have to type passwords to access the site. Our normal Win2k login's
aren't enough anymore. Office users are used to just accessing the site
without passwords when there at work. It will be next to impossible to get
the ok to make them have to type passwords each time. But still I'd like to
provide access for some of them from home. Especially the board members.
Is there a way to have the best of both. If I check both boxes (Basic &
Windows Authentication) I have the original problem with the remote 98
machines.
TIA
Steve

Your are seeing multiple problems for multiple reasons.

1. Windows Authentication will not work consistently over the internet and
is not recommended.
2.Windows98 does not use logons so there are no credentials to pass when
internal.

One way around this would be anonymous or using RAS.

Thanks.

Ok thanks. Can you point me toward some documentation or resources that
will help me set up RAS or anonmous access. Does anonymous mean that anyone
can access the site without a password? I can't let that happen.

I want to be able to have staff and board members access the site from their
homes regardless of the operating system they use. I don't want the rest of
the world to be able to access it. Is this possible using IIS and
Sharepoint Team Services?

Thanks
Steve

Since you can not use annonymous; No matter how you do it they will still
be required to log in.
