I'm running an IIS 6 web server. There's an ASP page that needs to send
e-mails using CDO. When doing this, it gets an "access denied" error (id
80070005). I'm running the website under an account different than the
default IUSR_SERVERNAME, and I don't want to make this user member of Domain
Users, for security reasons. So I think I should give permission to send
e-mails directly to this user. How can I accomplish this ?
The server has SMTP installed, since it's also an Exchange 2003 front-end.
Thanks

If you are trying to use CDO and you are using a custom AppPoolIdentity,
this will happen -- you need to give the AppPoolIdentity access to the SMTP
metabase (CDO can't read the metabase to determine its mail folders due to
access denied).
If you run the website using a different account, make sure that user has
read/write permissions to the mail folders or else CDO will also fail in the
manner described.
In other words, IIS6 doesn't run as local system, so you need to start
explicitly ACL'ing the various mail folders to the identity you are
choosing.

Try filemon to trace it.

Ok, what are the mail folders I need to give IIS access to ?
The server is also an Exchange front-end, I don't know if this changes
something.

Yes it does. You are using the SMTP service of Exchange, and not IIS at this point, as both cannot exist. Run filemon from www.sysinternals.com to see
exactly where you are failing.
Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.
