Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Every now and then I can't access my site's cpanel from various computers.
Their support said something about firewalls and opening port 8080 and some
other port. I don't know much about firewalls, etc. Is there a way to
troubleshoot the problem to determine what is preventing the conenction? The
login screen does not show up. I immediately get a DNS error, saying site
could not be found. I know I am typing it correctly too.

thanks,

brian

Restrictive firewalls will tend to shut down all the non standard ports.
However 8080 is normally considered a fairly standard one as it is used for
some proxy servers as well.

In my experience this affects pepole in offices more than people at home.
You need to get the firewall adjusted to allow access on port 8080
There are other ways round it , but they are rather complicated, but I can
explain further if you wish.

Sorry for the delay.

OK, you need to install this script on a web server:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.jmarshall.com/tools/cgiproxy/" target="_blank">http://www.jmarshall.com/tools/cgiproxy/</a>

When you access <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.domain.com:2082" target="_blank">http://www.domain.com:2082</a> or whatever
through the script it will take the data in on port 2082 and send it back to
you on port 80

The down side is that if other people get access to this they will us eyour
bandwidth to download porn via your server so you probably want to password
protect it.

Is this helpful?

It should run from the cgi-bin on any web server provided you can run nph
scripts (non parsed header).
Try it and see.

Hi Brian...it could be a number of things. If your provider has clogged servers
with too many users that could cause this. Control panels should snap up in a
second. If they don't then there is server load problems and your server is not
properly balanced. I would be happy to test your DNS for you if you give me
more info...please stop by at webcs.com/support and fill me in completely.

You're full of it. Most likely, its a firewall problem on the user's end.

maybe look here: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.cheap-web-site-hosting-services.net" target="_blank">http://www.cheap-web-site-hosting-services.net</a> , they have
review on 10 cheap web hosts under 10$. Seems pretty good. Not sure if
they fit with what you need but worth a look..
