Post subject: How to Accept Credit Card Payments?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

This question really has nothing to do with the web, but it is related
to PayPal, so I'm hopeful you guys might have an answer for me.

I want to use my credit card to pay a programmer who has been doing
work for my company. What does he have to do to accept credit cards?

He did some research and found PayPal. Unfortunately, when I went to
PayPal.com to make the payment, I was asked to agree to an user
agreement which included a commitment to binding arbitration and who
knows what else. On principle, I never agree to binding arbitration.
Furthermore, I don't understand why my contract with PayPal should be
any more complicated than the little slip of paper I sign when I use my
credit card to buy a meal at a restaurant. In any case, PayPal is out.

Can anyone suggest an alternative? (How does the restaurant do it?)

PayPal has those terms when you set up an account because they actually keep
money in their users accounts, much like a bank.

It was my understanding that you can make payments by credit card on PayPal
without getting an account.

He would need to get a merchant account. Given the cost of this and the
overhead often involved (I've had one, it's a PITA), I think you're just
going to have to (a) use PayPal or (b) send him a check.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

He'll need to get a merchant account with someone. The best prices are
with his local bank, but there are online places to get them, also.

However, with monthly and per-transaction charges, these can get to be
expensive when dealing with just one person. I don't accept credit
cards for just that reason. It's cash/business check or no work.

Use your credit card to withdraw cash from an ATM machine then pay the
programmer using that cash....

That way you've still used your credit card to pay him....

Why can't you just give him a cheque (check)? If I did some work for you
I would be damned if you tried to pay me using a method I don't
currently accept. Why should he have to accept credit cards? Just pay
the man.
