Why is it that every time I ask a question about something technical or ASP
related, I get a few great answers, then the thread degenrates into a
flaming session?......
Am I asking the wrong questions?.....Or am I just a damn
troublemaker?.....To be honest I'm starting to get paranoid Wink

Many threads degenerate because you can't make everyone happy. For example,
in this thread someone mentioned that asp has no regex support and I
provided a link on MS's site for some regex docs. Guess what, a php diehard
thought I was praising asp. Even if I did, what's his problem?

This is normal at a.w.w. You will find Linux geeks bashing Windows users.
hand coders bashing wysiwig users or IDE's, free or the not-exactly-free
hosting vs paid hosting.. etc.

I always thought you were a bit of an educated troll, Sam. *huge grin*

Then there's karim who mucks up the thread, aka the uneducated troll Smile

Then there's most of us who are clueless and don't speak of that which
we don't know.

Then there's William and Bill and a handful of others who attract the
uneducated troll and any answers in the thread get lost in the ensuing
flame fest.

I hope you get your answer Smile

Yes, answers may get lost. In fact, I was wondering if my suggestion had
worked/answered the question. Because it likely did get lost, I will
repost what I thought may work:

Function regex_replace(patternStr, replacementStr, subjectStr)
Dim regEx, str1
Set regEx = New RegExp
regEx.Pattern = patternStr
regex_replace = regEx.Replace(subjectStr, replacementStr)
End Function

alphanumeric_value = regex_replace("[0-9]", "", alphanumeric_value)

Again, I am pretty ignorant with ASP syntax, so you may need to do some
correcting...

One thing Justin.. if you want to help someone with his ASP project, you
help him with ASP.. not with PHP. I am sure you can come up with one line
php solutions to big ASP problems. Maybe the asp person will convert.

Comming from a programming background, I find that just because someone
points to something in a different language doesn't mean it can't help.
in any case, I had asked if asp had the type of function, showed the
useage as in PHP (which I know), then suggested that there should be a
lot of string manipulation functions available in ASP.

I have had problems with PHP before where someone who answered had given
an example in perl that got me to thinking of how to do the same with
similar functions.

Just because the OP didn't ask or doesn't know PHP, doesn't mean it
can't be helpful to creative thinkers.

That's not the intent at all. I never claimed to be a genius or
anything, just want to try and help where I may be able to.
Unfortunately, I think more along the lines of how I learn and think
rather than how others may see the answer.

That's fine. I went a step further and provided the resource to ASP's regex
docs.
And an FYI to the OP, there are free gui regex validators where you enter a
regex expression, the program validates it and outputs a string based on
your input string.

Well, Karim, we have come full circle. Perhaps you will now realise that
asp(.net) and php are two different languages that each have their
strengths and weaknesses. One is good at some things (PHP at Regex), and
the other at other things (ASP.net at... error documentation or whatever
you were saying a while back).

The point is, ASP.net isn't the holy grail you've made it out to be -
it's just another programming environment. For some things it is very
useful, but for other things, it is a little more difficult to use.

PHP isn't an inferior language to the ASP.net languages, nor is it
superior: it is different. Programmers must trade off these strengths
and weaknesses to find a language/environment that they are comfortable
with.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I don't know about ASP's regex capability and whether PHP's is better or
not. Anyone who makes a statement that ASP' regex is weak should also
provide proof. I am sure ASP's regex will fit most people's needs.
Otherwise look for a better regex component.

I never said PHP is inferior. I said ASP.NET can be more productive and I
gave examples. Also there are situations when no matter what you do with
PHP, you can't come close to ASP.NET's performance, like when doing
websites with SQL Server. It's because ASP.NET, SQL Server and IIS are all
optimized for it including native drivers. However if PHP can do something
better than ASP.NET builtin capabilities, you can still get another
component, whether its free or commercial. I don't know PHP enough to know
what it can do that asp.net can't. Maybe someone here knows.

But does the function work or not?

That's all I wanted to know from this thread. It's my attempt at help
with ASP even though I don't know it.
