Am I a bad person for still rather liking ASP and even, in my darkest
moments, preferring it, to ASP.NET?

(I've used both quite a lot)

Why do you like ASP over ASP.NET? ASP.NET is SOOOOOOOOO much better.

ASP (vbscript) is MUCH easier to code in... I still code in it. I just
dont have time to make the .net switch yet.

Hmmn, maybe there was a mix-up - I received the tinfoil hat and rubber

Give examples. Considering you can use ASP's syntax in ASP.NET, what is
your issue with ASP.NET exactly? The people who don't like ASP.NET are the
ones who are struggling with OO concepts, code behind, classes, and tghe
magnitude of the .NET framework.

If you want to create a simple Hello World, you can drag and drop a label,
hit compile and run. The beauty of ASP.NET is you get also compiled code so
if you produce software for sale, you can protect it.

No, not quite, my gripe with ASP.NET (not the implementation languages)
is the poor markup and script it produces auto-magically, as well as the
reliance on server-side browser sniffing to dictate which browsers can
handle script and CSS (ie only IE and *not* Mozilla or Opera). ASP.NET
dictates decisions for me I'd very much prefer it didn't.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.webstandards.org/buzz/archive/2004_10.html#a000458" target="_blank">http://www.webstandards.org/buzz/archive/2004_10.html#a000458</a>

Apparently there is the promise of significant changes to rectify some
of these issues in ASP.NET 2.0. However, if it doesn't and if I can
muster sufficient enthusiasm, I'd like to write my own set of
standards-compliant form control classes. On the other hand, when you
already have a custom library of labour-saving functions for classic ASP
there isn't much of an impetus to move to ASP.NET unless I wanted better
scalability.

The Javascript it produces is standard javascript which runs in differemt
browsers. The browser sniffing is an aid. If the browser doesn't support
Javascript, don't you think it's a good idea, the produced pages should not
contain Javscript? Are you saying the CSS produces is only understood by
IE? Do you very specific examples. Note also that some of your issues are
related to the tool that produces ASP.NET, ie, Visual Studio and it's not
ASP.NET specific. You can always hand code your application or use another
tool that supports ASP.NET like Dreamweaver or Borland C#.

ASP.NET is full of ready made server controls that save you tons of time.
You can drag and drop a datagrid to display data from a database in a
spreadsheet like fashion. Do you know of any ASP.NET server controls that
do not behave correctly in non IE browsers?
The .NET framework has over 6500 classes. Don't you think these are labor
saving functions?

ASP.NET is event driven and you have total control of the objects at
various stages of their libes. You can do things when an object is loading,
before being rendered, after rendering, before being loaded with data,
after being loaded with data, before, while and after being updated..etc.
All the function templates and plumbing is there. All you have to do is
write your specific business objects and not worry about the detail. That's
how you become more produtive.
