Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I'm trying to see the effect of some new work I've added to my site.

Background

I use AOL v.5 on a Windows 98 machine.

Now despite clearing all my internet files via Internet Options, inlcuding
clearing the history, offline content and cookies.

And despite also rebooting the PC afterwards, my AOL Browser is still retaining
a startling number of pages in the drop down address bar and preventing me from
seeing my new pages.

How do I get rid of these stored pages?

Press F5 to get the latest version of a page without caching. Some pages are
cached locally on your machine, but others may be cached by AOL, or elsewhere
between your machine and the web server.

And ignore these anti-AOL fascists.

and a merry new year to you too.

btw: there are plenty good reasons to discourage the use of AOL.
Irresponsible caching being one of them.

I did that too, sorry I didn't mention that Smile

By the way, I've been doing this a couple of years and never had this problem
before.

I take that back - I just re-read my 1st post - I did mention it.

So someone else said cache ... and I'm prob being ignorant now but somebody
said cache ... and I used to think history and cache were the same thing.

So ... are they?

And somebody else said irresponsible caching by AOL

& that caching can occur between browser and server?

How does this work/happen ...

and how might you solve this without pressing F5 key?

Pending a move away from AOL obviously ... which I already had planned btw Wink

Many thanks

He's talking about the address bar drop down list of typed in sites.
The only way to clear that list is to erase the browser history.

duh...

No. The cache is the contents of your Temporary Internet Files ... the
history is a log of visited sites. I promise. If you erase/delete your
history, the drop down list of urls will disappear. I don't know if
that will solve your problem but it addresses your original question.

It does address the question thank you.

Unfortunately doing this, as I have already done for a couple of years, for me,
no longer empties out the drop down address list for some bizarre reason.

However, I did manage to clear it somehow yesterday eventually but cannot
recall how now.

I'd had a few beers by then, so until I remember I'm going to have to rely on
the F5 key. Oh well.

Thanks Judy!
