Are there any publicly available reports on the current number of web users
(both U.S. & globally) using screen resolutions of 800x600 or 1024x768 ?
I'm trying to figure out approx how many people would be "disenfranchised"
if a site were designed to target 1024x768...
I see I can buy a report from an agency for about $1000, whew ... no
thanks...
Thanks.

I managed to get around that issue on all my sites by setting up at 800
by 600 minimum and using table set to the percentage of the window
instead. If you set your page in a table at 95% or 99% or even a 100%
and set side panels, one or two it makes no difference at 150 - 2--
pixels and the set either a table inside the next or center panel with a
with of 100% [ a table if you want a third panel works pretty good ] and
then set the right panel at 150 pixels you can take advantage of any
browser viewing setting except for 600 by 480
Code is something like this:
<BODY>
<TABLE VALIGN=TOP CELLSPACING=2 CELLPADDING=10 WIDTH=100% BORDER=0>
<TR><TD VALIGN=TOP>
Left panel
<img src='/images/blank.gif' 'BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER HEIGHT=1 WIDTH=200'>
</TD><TD WIDTH=100% VALIGN=TOP>
Center panel
<img src='/images/blank.gif' 'BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER HEIGHT=1 WIDTH=404'>
</TD><TD WIDTH=150 VALIGN=TOP>
Right panel
</TD></TR></TABLE>
</BODY>
The gifs are 1 by 1 pixels white with white dropped or clear gifs. Set
the with of the important panels and they will remain that size.
I don't like frames so this is the solution I came up with.

There are other solutions as well but this one seemed to work the best
for me and every site I have built is designed using tables like this.

Why would you want to "disenfranchise" anyone?
There's no way to accommodate everyone, ref: screen resolution?
You might consider if your more interested in business users or home users.
The stats will probably be somewhat different for each group.
Besides, I'm not sure anyone can claim accuarte stats for something like
this, even at $1000 a pop.

If it helps, my site pulls predominantly UK traffic and has approximately
50% using 1024x768 and around 40% using 800x600....The rest are using
1280x1024

And if it helps some more: What if I have my 1600x1200 screen
divided into 4 nice little browserwindows of 800x600?
(or 6 of 800x400, or just 1 of 734x647 cause I like it spacey?)

Then I've absolutely no idea how my stats software would interpret
that.....That will have me pondering all evening now, LOL.....
For what it's worth, my site is optimised to render well at whatever
resolution.....I don't beleive in fixed size designs......

Exactly. My resolution is at 1280x1024, but my browser is at precisely
880x842 - an odd size, but the size I like, and that's how it stays!

It doesn't. Stats software, if it can give you any information about
resolution, will only give you the screen resolution not the size of the
browser. You cannot get any idea of that from your stats, which is why it
is pointless relying on stats for this.

Well that is the best solution to the problem, IM(NS)HO.

Well, there is one thing you can rely on from the stats: anyone
with a resolution of 800x600 or lower, will definitely not be
using a window larger than said resolution. ;-P

Yep and paradoxically, you don't need a stats package to tell you that.

Actually, it is possible to find the size of the browser window (or at
least the visible canvas area) in the vast majority of cases (except where
Javascript is disabled).
Use:
<script type="text/javascript">
function nose () {
var x = document.body.offsetWidth;
var y = document.body.offsetHeight;
var z = "hc-" + screen.width + "x" + screen.height + "-" + x + "x" + y;
var img = new Image();
img.src = 'http://www.yourdomain.com/1pixel.png?' + z;
}
</script>
with an appropriate onload attribute. Then scan through your web logs.
Note: there are a lot of caveats with this method. I'll leave you to
figure them out for yourself, but it can work...

gently, gently - don't want to rush things here. this poster hasn't been
around long enough to have heard tales of the table battles of yesteryear

I was mostly referring to the all-uppercase markup, and the deprecated/
unquoted attributes.
But yes, <mantra>tables are evil</mantra>

I have used upper case since I started. I do not use tabbing so this is
used to make the code easy to find with looking. I also program and
have used a few compilers but I never liked the way coding looked
because it would always wrap. Pain is the ass to find certain things.
