Post subject: 7023 Access is Denied on W3SVC Start
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2650 2U Server with a P4 Xeon
Processor and 1 GB RAM. We are running Windows 2003
Enterprise Server. This server is primarily a web server
for many web sites (about 50 small to medium sized sites
with less than 1,000,000 total hits per month). This
server has been running successfully for about 9 months.

Yesterday the W3SVC service stopped. I rebooted the
server and noticed that all IIS services were starting
except World Wide Web Publishing Service. When you try
to start the service it will throw an Error 5: Access is
Denied. The event viewer shows 7023 Access is Denied.
The service is set to use the Local System account. No
changes have been made to the server. I have tried to
use the AuthDiag tool, but I don't understand what it is
telling me.

Any help anyone could throw my way would be greatly
appreciated!

Best regards,

Rob

Rob,

You need to run filemon while trying to start the W3SVC service. Then stop
the filemon log and search it for access denied. You should see where you
need to change permissions.

You download filemon from www.sysinternals.com

Let me know if you need anything further...

Thank you,
