Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hey,

I have a question. I have several articles in which I am thinking about
submitting to a few ezines. Most ezines stipulate that they would like
submitted articles to be 60 characters per line.

This is ok. However, when I bring up my articles in WORD, I think
I'll bet there is a simple why I can auto format my articles to be 60
characters per line.

But I don't know how. Is there a way? And, if not with WORD,
what can I use?

Thanks in Advance!

Paris

In word, I think if you have some of the international languages settings
installed (particularily east asian) you can enable the "document grid"
which will let you specify the number of characters per line
(click FILE >> PAGE SETTINGS if you see a tab listed as "document grid"
then you have it set up... this might not be available to western laguages)

But, the best thing might be to just do a line of alternating "I" and "M"...
do 30 of each, like: IMIMIMIMIMIMIMIM... etc

That would take what is most commonly the narrowest character and widest
character and find the average size of them... then set your margins to the
width of that line

I suggest that, because if you look at:

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Thats 60 Is and 60 Ms... unless you are using a fixed width font the Ms
should be about 2 to 2.5 times the length of the Is... when it comes to
these articles, they probably have a set width the columns appear as and
they want the articles to fit within that width (and 60 "average" characters
probably fills the column)

used a fixed size font (courier etc.) before setting your margins.

I don't know for sure if this will work or not, but this is what I'd
try:

In MSword you can set the font to a fixed-width font like courier and
then adjust the right hand margin to make the lines wrap at the proper
point. I don't think there's a way to do it by number of characters so
you will probably have to count the characters and spaces on one line
and use that to figure out how big to make the right margin. Save it as
a txt file.

Getting it done in Word will not help because when selecting it again and
copying / pasting, the word wrapping is lost. I've just quickly made a
little proggy that'll do the trick.

Download it at http://www.xmlssoftware.com/quickstuff/sixty.exe
(it's less than 200k)

Paste the text into the window, then click the "Copy all" button. The text
will now be on the clipboard, including the text wrapping at 60 chars.

I've only tested it in WinXP Pro and Win98. It depends on the font
"terminal" which should be on any basic windows system install (I hope).

Note that if you just select text and copy, the wrapping will have no
effect, it works only with the button.

Hope you like it.
