I'm trying to install Apache 2.0.49 on a Sun Ultra 10 with Solaris 9
(SunOS 5.Cool. The compilation seems Ok, but when I try to start the
daemon it doesn't start. It doesn't even open the log files or dump
a core, nothing, just hangs there.

httpd -t or httpd -l or whatever return the expected results, so
it seems that the binary is Ok, AFAICS all the libraries are in the
right places. No info whatsoever in the system log files.

Apache 1.3.29 works fine (even recompiled from scratch).

Any idea?

Trace the system calls with truss, for example:

Maybe you can see an error message ...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

No error messages, it looks like it goes into 'sleeping mode' as soon
as he reach the first fork()...

---lots of stuff---
stat64("/usr/sbin/awk", 0xFFBEF638) Err#2 ENOENT
stat64("/usr/bin/awk", 0xFFBEF638) = 0
access("/usr/bin/awk", 9) = 0
read(19, " e s a c\n\n e x i t $".., 128) = 19
fork() = 13462
waitid(P_PID, 13462, 0xFFBEFA10, WEXITED|WTRAPPED|WNOWAIT) (sleeping...)

- here he stops -

....I'm beginning to think that there is something wrong with this
installation of Solaris...

Well, I sorta figured it out: on a fresh installation of Solaris 8
there are a lot of things missing, so, to have Apache 2.0.4x
working it's necessary to install all the 'recommended' patches...
around 100Mb of patches (compressed). A very tiring and boring
process...
