I updated our Webserver from Suse 8.2 (Apache 2.0.46) to Suse 9.0 (Apache
2.0.47).
Since then, I cannot open PDF-documents (document won't start with %20pdf).
When I first save the File and then try to open it again, it works.
I thought of mime-problems but application/pdf seems to be correctly set.
I guess this is a bug in apache (or in a library?). Suse does not (yet)
provide an update and I would avoid compiling it myself.
Does anyone know what's wrong?

What do your PDF documents start with now? If the contents have become
corrupted, the details may give a clue to the cause of the problem. If you
use a browser that doesn't have the adobe plugin installed to simply
download the file and open it, does it work? If so it doesn't sound like a
problem with apache, but with your reader.

When I download the file (right click and "save as") the file starts with
%PDF- and can be displayed. When I just open it, it fails (unless I
downloaded it prior, then it will be called from the browser cache and works
as well).
The effect is at least with internet explorer 5 and 6 (wich of course worked
before the serverupdate). Netscape seems do display most files.
You can try - <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.baer-gmbh.com." target="_blank">www.baer-gmbh.com.</a> go to download and take the first file
(produkt.pdf).

I tried and was unsucessful. I used two machines with two different net
connections, it appears acrobat was not able to download enough of the pdf
to display it. The connection was just too slow, and I kept getting
timeouts. I'd check your connection for any problems first, or the box for
load problems. Then I'd suggest you check you saved the pdfs optomised for
web use (so they will be able to start to display without having to download
so much).

By the time I got home (about 45 minutes after my last post) the page I had left
loading there had completed, and I was able to view the PDF fine, certainly
looks like a connection problem to me.

Sorry but I'm sure it is not. The effect is also via lan. And the effect is
also when I use a different Server that is directly connected to the
requesting machine.
A nearly identical Server with the Suse 8.2 on it works fine.
The error message (file does not begin with %pdf-) comes immediately.
You are right, not the entire file is transmitted, but I guess, acrobat
simply does not request it because of the faulty first bytes.
A odd thing is, when I put a large .doc-file, I can open it. It seems only
to fail with .pdf's.
