Yes virtual hosts work. I had problems also.
the problems were (for me)
1. Be sure to save confg file, then restart apache
2. the <VirtualHost 192.168.0.1> the ip address is NOT always that of your
server but of the computer onwhich apache answers. (the local IP) Look at
your "servername" setting above virtual host in the confg file and look at
the ip address there.
3. server directory exists and is spelled correctly?
