Hi, all,
Just wondering - does anyone really provide 24/7 phone support?
Most of the time the trouble ticket system works fine. User forums are
great, also.
But what about when your site is down - as is the host?
I thought I had one with this support. At least they advertise it.
Well, I had a problem this morning and wanted to talk to them. Called
and eventually was told by a recording "my party isn't available...
Please leave a message...". This was followed by "I'm sorry, the voice
mailbox is full...".
Normally I wouldn't have even called on this problem. But it's not the
first time. For instance, it occurred last Wednesday, but wasn't fixed
until Saturday morning. It reoccurred yesterday.
BTW - after not being able to get anyone on the phone, I submitted a
high priority trouble ticket. It remains unanswered after 6 hours.
So, who has support you can actually reach by phone - and is populated
by someone who is smarter than a mouse pad? (BTW - I did try
webhostingtalk.com - but they don't take requests for hosting services
any more).
TIA,

With small companies (and alot of web hosting companies are small) saying
"24/7 Support!" usually means "I have a cell phone that I carry with me at
all times and don't turn it off at night"

They usually do... I remember back when I was a 1 to 2 man operation and we
did hosting. If it was 2am and I was rebooting the server for maintennance
I'd usually get somebody call and say "the server is down! the server is
down!" but when it was an actual problem at a peak time and you are just 1
person (or 2) and working on it, having to break from your work to answer
the phone every 30 seconds can sometimes be the least effective use of your
time at the moment

My cellphone... errr... 24/7 Tech Support Department had this same
problem... Fido only let me have 10 messages in my voicemail box

For a problem that spans 4 days you should definitly call in... you might
not know if the problem is going to last as long this time around, but
better safe than sorry
> BTW - after not being able to get anyone on the phone, I submitted a

Did they not answer it? Or did they fix it and just not get back to you?

For this you can pretty much go two routes... either go with a big company
(an ISP, telecommunications company, etc) but the drawback is that often you
have to pay 5 to 10 times the rate a smaller host may charge. Or, you
could do research, ask around and see what people think about the host or
look for sites that rate the hosts... some things you can deduce yourself
(if they charge $5 a month for hosting and are hosting 500 sites... thats
$2500 a month, obviously they don't have enough cash going around to hire a
24/7 support team) but you can't always use income as a guage IE: my
company does pretty good in the income department, but our support only runs
from 5am to 10pm... outside of those hours when the staff has gone home, its
a crapshoot if I feel like answering the cellphone to tend to minor things
(I do carry a pager though or leave it next to my head when I sleep that
will alert me to things like system down)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Anyone really DO 24/7 phone support? |

Depends on how much you're willing to pay.
Offering effective 24/7 phone support is expensive, if you have any kind of
a substantial customer base. You may be able to find that with a cheap host
that is small enough to have the owner walking around with his cell phone
24/7.
One alternative, that we are looking into is a premium support package which
includes call-back support with guaranteed return call within an hour. You
might find something similar for a reasonable monthly fee.

Tina,
I've done IT support for years - starting with 1982 when I was working
for IBM (and they were billing me out at $400/hr., of which I was
getting < $20/hr. <G>).
I didn't say I wanted it for $3.95/mo. Right now I'm just looking for
any reliable company who does have it.
A down web site can be worse than no web site at all!

Agustus,
The problem is them not crediting my account with the correct payment.
While the site is currently still running, I can't add anything to it
(like another database).
While I would not have normally called on this, it is the third time
it's happened. And I want it fixed this time.
It's been > 9 hours since I submited the high priority ticket. Not a
word from them.

I've been with WebServePro (www.webservepro.com) for several years. Had very
few problems (the most inconvenient was when they replaced the box my domain
is hosted on - took a few hours). I have reached them by telephone at 10:30
pm (CST) on a Sunday. I've never regretted choosing them.

Bill,
Nope. I don't have the communications infrastructure, the power
backup...
And colo isn't any better if they don't have a phone!

They may very well have different levels of support service for their colo
customers.
Like us, we don't offer general phone support for our budget hosting
accounts....but colo/dedicated server customers get our main office number
(one that is not listed on our site) as well as cell phone numbers for
myself and 2 of our sysadmins.

For anyone considering colocating with an ISP who doesn't offer phone
support during off hours, you can have a remote power switch, either
attached to a phone line or through the web. I mean if you need to reboot
the server and no one is there, you can cold reboot your server yourself.
If you have a hardware failure, the ISP support won't be able to help.

The other issue facing small companies is that the same number/person(s)
handles all types of enquiry. It is acceptable to wait till normal office
hours for "I'm having trouble with ...." requests, but server down is
Priority One/Mission Critical.

While remote reboot is great...the ISP should be able to help with hardware
failure as well, on your colo. There's no reason why they can't drop a new
HD in, etc.

Many ISP's don't do this. A colocated server means it's your server and
they just have it at their location. They can do it if they are paid to do
it and they have no responsibility if something goes wrong. I colocated
before and my setup would probably be too complicated fot them plus I
wouldn't let them because I used scsi raid systems and it's not just a
matter of plugging a hard drive. Settings need to be done in the HD
controller, jumpers need to be set. That's why if I colocate I colocate in
my own town so I do the work myself.

The owner doesn't sleep?

If you have someone working a graveyard shift, why doesn't he just answer
the phone. I would think at night, he has little to do if everyting is

Hi, Chuck,
Thanks for the info. I looked at their website, and it seems to be a
reasonable accomodation - on site 10:00AM - 11:00PM Eastern time, with
the calls routed to an employees home after hours.
And no, normally I wouldn't be calling at 3:00AM unless the server is
down (heck - I'm not even normally UP at that time <G>).
When I worked for IBM, I was on call 24/7. And while I didn't like the
middle-of-the-night calls, generally the calls I did get were really
high priority (i.e. bank's mainframe down - which costs BIG bucks).
Unfortunately, even their ecommerce account (at $39.95/mo. + SSL
certificate) is a little limiting for me. 1 MySql database and two
mailing lists just won't work. And 150Mb storage would be tight, but
probably doable.
