Anyone know the current data regarding what percentage of folks use the
various monitor resolutions?

I don't know whether to design a website with 800 by 600 pixels in mind, or
go for 1024 by 768.

Suggestions welcomed.

most users use 1024 with 800 coming 2nd, if u use a fluid design then u shouldnt need to worry about
monitor res, however when i use fixed width designs i always make sure it looks ok at 800

For what it's worth (and it might not be much) here are my own site's stats
for your perusal in that area, and others:

But your stats are for monitor resolution, not browser window size,
which you can't tell. I know very few people with hi-res monitors that
have their browser windows maximized.

Right, monitor resolution. That was his question.

Understood, but the second line above: "I don't know whether to
design a website with 800 by 600 pixels in mind, or go for 1024 by
768" indicated he plans to hard-code a design at that size.

Be fluid. Design for no resolution.

OK, I see what you meant.

I hope I can donate a thought, that after much pondering, experimenting,
evaluation, and other trial and error techniques, I have hard coded my site
for an 800 x 600 pixel window. I've heard many of the arguments, and have
come to my own conclusions based on the stats I see on my site and my target
audience (high school alumni). I do admit I'd prefer to have a fluid
design, but I personally prefer a particular presentation and have settled
on this. I do keep my eyes open and play with some experimentation when I
see something I haven't used before.

So there will be others out there that have made choices based on such
thinking (some, perhaps, with no such thinking). I am assuming that most
will agree that there are exceptions to the fluid design approach and you
probably will agree, though perhaps some hard coded pages are not so complex
as to require this.

I just wanted to add my two cents and acknowledge some exceptions, while
still enjoying the entertainment different voices bring to these AWW
discussions.

John

A far better option than losing this particular website. Good work Tina and

Perhaps you could make your site more fluid by experimenting with
percentages for the width of your columns, instead of using px. From a
glance, 40%, 30%, 30% should be about right, or just a bit less to
compensate for IE bugs with margin and padding.

Here's a three-column template you may be interested in investigating:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://bluerobot.com/web/layouts/layout3.html" target="_blank">http://bluerobot.com/web/layouts/layout3.html</a>
This one has static-sized left and right with floating content. You
could probably adapt your pages to fit this model quite easily. A peek
at the source also shows just how easy a page it is to maintain.

There will be some designs that do not lend themselves to floating.
Heavy use of images...

'Tis that: entertaining. <g>

As you wish, but why don't you at least centre it?

It looks ridiculous set hard to the left when viewed on a large monitor.
